The Witch of Portobello, an international best selling fiction novel by Paulo Coelho. Originally it was written in Portuguese under the title ‘A Bruxa De Portobello’. It is translated into english by Margaret Jull Costa.

This magical book got published on 2006 containing 2006 containing 268 pages.


Basically its about a woman named Athena born into Gypsy tribe out of a wedlock. Scared that her people might take disastrous step, her mother left her in-front of an orphanage. Later, she was adopted by a Lebanese couple.


As a child, Athena was special. She could hear voices and make prophecies. When she was in college, she decided to drop out, get married, and have children. This sudden and out of no where decision of her, had shook her parent. But it wasn't out of no where, there was always something burning within her. But no matter what her parents stood with her. But neither of them were mature enough of this big change and soon the marriage fell apart.


There was always something bothering her. Her quest for the answers of her questions like who she is, her purpose, only kept increasing day after day, dragging her closer and closer to trouble. She soon became a controversial spiritual leader in London. She was growing in the intoxicating power of the mother through the secrets of dance, un-rhythmically. She felt as if she was setting her soul free.


Soon institutions started hunting her down because she could heal people, make prophecies. And then came the day, she knew she would die or more of like get killed. She left her son with his grandparents and left her body for people to find out. But did she really die?


The Witch of Portobello has got 3.5/5 in Good Reads.
